FIX for "This accessory is not optimized for this iphone"

Technical, iPhone, 211 words   English (AU) Bookmark and Share

Recently with an upgrade to iOS 4.1 (or maybe a coincidence), my lady’s iPhone keeps popping up with

“This accessory is not optimized for this iphone”

After much Googling, I ended up having to troll through Apple’s forum before coming across this thread which had the solution to my problem. I’ve listed the possible fixes to save you the trouble of scrolling through Apple’s forum.

...

The issue appears to be caused by dirt or water in the dock port which confuses the iPhone’s device detection via currents on the pins of the dock port (see lady ada’s post).

So heres some possible fixes

  1. 1. Look in the dock port and remove any dirt, lint.. etc anything that shouldn’t be there. You may want to use an air duster to blow it out.

  2. 2. If it got wet or was near a water source when the error started appearing, try burying it in rice to dry out the moisture and hope that it has not caused any permanent damage.

  3. 3. If you get this error only when connected to your iPhone dock or cable, check the peripheral. Test on the dock or cable with another iPhone.

If it still doesn’t work, you may have damaged the pins, possibly with moisture. You need to seek professional help.

Aby johnI found that using a q tip to clean the port and the earphone spot works as well of it is moisture or dust

AshokThank you, Thank you, Thank you. Who would have thought, just air-brushing the docking port would do the magic. We may need to update the Apple people about this whole thing. I really can't thank you enough. My phone is back in action. You rock!!

Then after the message comes up 'this application is not optimised by your IPHONE', i have no sound. I have to turn mine on and off to get the sound back. Any additional information would be appreciated.

Comment from: Rayray [Visitor]
RayrayOK, I was a little skeptical that this would really work. I've read soooooo many forum posts on how to resolve this problem. Seemed like a toothbrush wasn't going to really help. But the sound is back!!! I was just about to go buy a new phone - and you saved me from having to do so. This really does work!!

One question, though, while the sound is back, I'm still getting that annoying pop up many times each day "this accessory is not....". Anyone know how to fix that, too?

Thank you again - so much!

Comment from: Kevin [Visitor]
KevinI dropped my iPhone 3GS into a sink full of water. I snatched it right out and tried drying it off, but the screen started acting funny and got dim so I turned off the phone. I stopped by an AT&T store and the guy advised me to take out the SIM card & put the phone in rice to let it dry out. After 24 hours, I took it out and it started up looking fine. I recharged it but when I turned it back on, I got this error message. I searched under the error message and this was the first website listed. I tried both blowing into the dock and headhone ports and connected and disconnected my charger cord a couple of times and that did the trick! Thanks so much!!

BeckyYaay!! That was so annoying everytime i recieved a text or went on emails or facebook the message was coming up.. not once but several times each time! all dried out now following its swim in vodka! Note to self if phone is to share bag with vodka... make sure the bottle lid is on properly!! I also noticed some vodka had seeped in through my cracked screen (i shoudlnt have nice phones!) but leaving it face up in the sun seemed to dry it out and now the watermark effect has gone too!!

MABSMy phone has not been subject to any moisture.

Tried cleaning the port slots - didn't work.
Tried earphones in and out a dozen times (12) -didn't work.
Tried software update - didn't work.
Tried connecting the charging cable quite a few times (delicately!) And I don't want to shout too soon but the message has now dissappeared and not returned for almost 3 minutes now! So seems to have worked!

However, still can't listen to anything through the speakers built into the phone.

Am going to get a new toothbrush and gentle brush the port hole and see if that fixes it, but in the meantime if you guys have any more ideas they would be most helpful and gratefully received!
02/08/11 @ 14:32
Comment from: MABS [Visitor]
MABSNothing has worked for me!

I have hard booted it, re-installed the software, defluffed it in the adapter port and the headphone socket, check for damage (all pins are in place correctly), blown it out with compressed air, stuck it in rice to rid it of any moisture (never been near any).

I can only surmise it's an issue with the software.

So what will happen when I call Apple to discuss this? Probably send me on my way to my phone supplier, whom in return will then advise me they must send it to Apple, leaving me to run around wasting time trying to sort out a problem caused by someone else!
NOT HAPPY!

Laura Woollardmy husband dropped his i phone in the sea, yes the sea, for at least 30seconds it lay there under water having a lovely time. It came out still working but with this error, we popped it in a bag of rice thinking this will never recover but get worse once the water spreads through the phone, but it did work. So impressed. Now my phone is doing it so I have every faith having not dropped it in the sea that a bit of rice will sort it out!

Comment from: Kasper [Visitor]
KasperI've fixed three iPhones so far with this issue, and for those of you who had no positive result cleaning out the dock connector, the solution is to have the whole docking module replaced. Cleaning is the often a successful solution, but it is also quite common that simply cleaning out the connector won't fix this annoying problem.

One of the repairs I did for this same issue (plus not being able to adjust ringer volume / no sound in speaker), was caused caused by dirt in the head phone jack plug, or faulty jack. I replaced it, and problem was solved. The dock module is by far the easiest to replace of these two parts. If your iPhone is still under warranty, you should of course try this option, but if not, get an offer for replacing the dock connector module from a iPhone repair shop. Aim at a price around 50 US. Changing the jack however, will probably be a bit more, as it is pretty tedious work.
Good luck, Kasper

zairuioh my god! yes! The thing that did the trick was using a vacuum cleaner and suck out all the dusk inside my iphone and also use an old tooth brush to brush out the dusk. Also, you can try to blow air into the charger port/ cable so that the dusk in it would disappear! Thanks lots!

Comment from: Ric [Visitor]
RicI had this problem with my 3G after taking it into the lake. I put the phone in a 150 degree oven for an hour or so, then buried it in rice for a couple of days. The phone came back to life when placed on a charger, but this warning kept coming up and the sound was lost when the device was unplugged. Cleaning the port did not fix the problem, but a cool accessory called the Charge Block Case for Iphone 3 did. In addition to having the extra battery capacity, it occupies the charge port which keeps the warning message and loss of sound from occurring!
