Xdmx Setup

Technical, Linux/Unix, 137 words   Bookmark and Share

This is the result of having to many old crappy PCs (Pentium 2s and below), 8 unused 19inch monitors and bucket load of boredom. You get 8 monitors linked up to form one giant screen via Xdmx (Distributed Multi-head X), which simply put is a Linux based software that allows several PCs with their own monitors to link up via TCP/IP Ethernet network to form a big giant screen.

The above setup was done with the primary machine on a Pentium D with 3 video cards and 3 monitors connected, 4 secondary Pentium 1 boxes with 1 video card and 1 monitor each and a Pentium 2 box with one video card and 1 monitor. They all have a cut down Ubuntu Gutsy installation, has Gnome running on the big screen with Xinerama enabled and auto startup is done via instructions here.
