New Powerpal

Powerpal is a bluetooth based smart energy monitor that basically connects your electricity meter to your smartphone and tracks in real time how your home is using energy.

It does so by counting the number of flashes on your power meter to determine the number of kilowatts consumed.

Ever wondered whats inside a Powerpal?

First up, this device isn't a scam and works quite well to track power usage. However, one of the interesting things in the FAQ of the device is that it never needs new batteries and is designed to last up to 10 years.

I was skeptical on this and after using the device for around 6 months, it stopped working. I reached out to their support and they happily send me a new replacement one.

So I decided to open up the dead one to see whats inside.

The top white cover was stuck pretty tight, I thought there was some sort of antenna at the top and after using two pliers to force the white part from the base. This is what it looks like

Interesting to see these low power bluetooth devices using just two AA batteries soldiered to the board it self. Unfortunately, I punctured the batteries and couldn't tell with the multimeter if the batteries were dead or I damaged it while prying it open.

Amazing that they can fit all that on that little board powered by 2 AA batteries.
